Journal 6- Jacob Watson

Born in January 28 of 1948 Charles Taylor is a former president of  Liberia and a convicted war criminal. Charles studied in america for quite a long time before he returned to Liberia and joined the administration of Samuel Doe( president of Liberia before Charles).  Charles then fled to the US after being accused of stealing nearly a million dollars from the Liberian government. Charles is then arrested in Boston and held for the Liberian government. It is then believed that Charles escaped to mexico and then sought asylum in Libya. While in Libya Charles formed a militia that sparked a civil war that killed 150,000 and left more than half the population of Liberia as refuges. Charles, somehow, is then elected to be president of Liberia in a general election running under the campaign slogan "He killed my ma, he killed my pa, but I will vote for him". Sure enough he win the election with 75% of the votes. After becoming president Charles reconstructed the army filling it with members of his old militia. Rebels struggled against Charles and quickly went to action.  Monrovia, the capital of Liberia, soon became a place of nonstop gun fights and looting. Charles was accused by several governments of assisting the RUF in Serra Leon with trades of weapons in exchange for blood diamonds. In addition Charles was also accused of assisting in the recruitment of child soldiers and personally directing RUF operations in Serra Leon. After being accused by the UN of gross human rights violations Charles agreed to go into exile in Nigeria, however, while on his way there he was captured and charged with crimes against humanity along with war crimes in Serra Leon. He was then sentenced to 50 years in prison for aiding and abetting war crimes in Serra Leon.
Charles Taylor, leader of the rebel National Patriotic Front of Liberia (NPFL) waves to recruits 28 May 1990 upon seizing the port of Buchanan, 200 kms (120 miles) from the capital Monrovia.
