Journal Five- Liv Reggi

In the documentary film, The Hobart Shakespearians, The teacher Rafe had a huge impact on these kids. The kids came from a very very bad neighborhood not only neighborhood but most didnt come from very good home lives either. I think the biggest thing that stuck out to me in this was the fact that he cared about these kids so much he took them on trips and actually helped them get better. Some teachers if you don’t get it they really will just look past you but i think he did a great job teaching them if they didnt get it he helped them. He took them on these trips so they could see things other then where they were so they could see if they work hard enough they can have a better life they just need to work hard. I think that is why the statement he kept saying stood out to me so much “ there are no shortcuts” and that is so true in the world and in school there’s really no shortcuts in anything. When watching this i did think about my school because where I come from most of the kids come from bad home lives. But my school didnt have a teacher like him that could actually help those kids.

A goal for this year that I have is to figure out which college I’m going to move to and which major I’m going to end up picking. I have 2 majors that I’m kind of stuck between so I hope to kind of figure out by the end of this year going into next year. I would love to be an oncology nurse because I’ve had to be around them for a while now with my mom being sick. But my other option is to be an radiology tech.

  1. I agree that there as teachers that are not willing to take the extra time to explain something again for the students that didn’t pick up on it the first time. I think it is important that more teachers follow Rafe’s example and make sure that the kids get it before moving on, because once you fall behind, it can be difficult to catch up.

  2. Those are all really good points! I agree with how the teacher took the time to help everyone while other teachers would just move past ones that are struggling. Those are two very cool majors and I know you’ll pick the one that makes you more happy. IF you want to go into nursing stuff, Kent State has an awesome nurse program

  3. I really connect with the “there are no shortcuts” part of the documentary too. There’s no part of life where you can just shortcut your way to success, otherwise everyone would have done everything they wanted. Good luck on your college/major search.
