Journal 5 -- Gabriel Pullen

The Hobart Shakespeareans is a very cool documentary film about inner city Los Angeles elementary school kids, who read, and also re-enact Shakespeare plays. These kids, for the most part, do not seem to have amazing home lives, as their teacher, Mr.Rafe, explains in the documentary. Regardless, Mr.Rafe does everything he can to provide a quality education to them, and set them up for success later in their lives. Mr.Rafe's definition of success being where the kids will end up 5, 10 years down the line. Not whether or not they pass his class.

Mr.Rafe is known for how he teaches his kids how to read, and fully comprehend advanced English books. Books including: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, To Kill A Mockingbird, The Lord of The Flies, and many different Shakespeare books. Mr.Rafe explains that he likes to teach Shakespeare because that is what he was raised on as a kid. He thinks the kids can learn a lot through Shakespeare. Mr.Rafe has a group of kids that re-enact the Shakespeare plays line for line. This requires a lot of hard work from the kids, and dedication.

I enjoyed this a lot, because you can tell their teacher really cares about educating elementary schoolers, and he shows it. He has done so much to provide for the hardworking kids. He really understands that if you expect a lot from people, you have to be willing to put in more work than them.
