Cam Anello Groundbreakers
The profile that stuck out to me was about Pastor Eric D. Williams and the funeral he did for the man who died from AIDS. I was so drawn to this profile because of how everyone gave up on this guy because he was gay and died from AIDS but Eric stepped up and gave him his funeral. In the beginning of the profile Eric quotes, "There's a kid, been a member of his church all his life, and he's died of AIDS and his pastor won't do the funeral. He was twenty-six years old, and he just happened to be gay. She said that when the pastor of the church found out how he died, he just said, "The funeral can't happen in our church."(Isay 237) This whole quote sets an immediate tone for the profile and got me hooked on wondering if the man would get his funeral. During the rest of the profile, Eric tells the reader that he will do the funeral and the surprises he got from doing it. On page 239 after announcing he would do the funeral he quotes, "At lunchtime I went to join my fellow pastors, and when I sat down at the table everybody got up and walked away."(Isay 239) This blew my mind and I couldn't believe that pastors would do this. At the end of the profile, I'm so inspired by this pastor for being different and not doing what everyone else did.

It really goes to show how much prejudice can effect people. Just because he did something kind for someone the rest of the church didn't agree with he was shunned
ReplyDeleteThis profile really stuck out to me to because all these people who he thought was his friend just abandoned him just because he said he would do a kids funeral. I think that's so crazy that just because you say you're going to do a funeral that everyone else wouldn't do they just stop talking to you.
ReplyDeleteThis profile was interesting to compare to the past couple of years. It shows how much things have changed because more information has come out about AIDS and how the stigma around AIDS has evolved over time.
ReplyDeleteI like it how you went straight to the point and showed the problem. I also feel like doesn't matter who the person is if they die we should give them proper funeral because that's least thing we can do as a human being.
