Journal Three form Madhaba Naidu

As of now, my active reading is going well. I have been highlighting and taking notes on margins, but I have not done any vocabulary and research work yet. I will start doing these as well on the next chapters. As of now I really like these two books; however, I don’t often read books, but these two books are surprising me in every chapter I read in a good way. The one thing I might struggle is remembering the name since I’m bad at the name and the names in both books are not typical names they all are different.

The strength in a long way gone is its heart touching and every time I read this book I feel sad and I always put myself in Ishmael’s position. Then wonder what I would have done if I was in his situation. Will I ever have had left my house? Will I be able to run from place to place to find food and to survive? When I think these things, I feel like connected to the character in the books. The weaknesses of this book are very minor. Like the name are hard to remember, and the places are hard to keep track of because he constantly moving from place to place. Other than that, this book is solid. The strength in The House on Mango Street is that it unique. It has a different style of writing which I have not experienced before. Also, the chapters are very short, and each chapter talks about different thing. Which is strength and weakness because it's hard to connect each chapter which means that I have to remember what's going on in each chapter so that I don't get lost as I read ahead. Both books are good but I like a long way gone better than The House on Mango Street because it's about a real story and it's touched my heart. Also, all the problems I saw in this book are still hopping around the world. That's what fascinates me to keep reading the book and find out more.

After reading chapters Four, Five, Six, and Seven the one chapter that stands out to me was the chapter Five. This chapter's theme was getting captured, escaping, and no sign of morality from the rebels. When they all got captured by the rebels Ishmael saw no morality on the rebels who were his age or close to his age. “The rebel pushed the old man to the ground, put gun to his head, and ordered his to get up. On trembling knees the old man managed to stand. The rebels laughed at him and made un laugh with them by pointing gun at us (p-32). These rebels are torturing an elder man because war has flipped the universe for them. “We grew up in a culture that demanded good behavior from everyone, and especially from the young. Young people were required to respect their elders and everyone in the community (p-33). If wasn't going on, then these rebels would have never acted like this or someone would have stopped them from their bad behavior. But, now there is no one there to stop them. This part is important because these rebels changed to become evil. So, even if the war ends it will take a long time from them to become normal. In another word they will never be going to change, which means that the war will keep going forever.

  1. This description of chapter five is very well written. The evilness of the rebels I don't think will ever go away unless the towns start to fight back.

  2. I really like how descriptive you are when explaining the books and I agree with all your points with the strengths and weaknesses and I see that theme you say now reading this.
