Journal Three
Part One: Learning how to practice effective active reading is a important skill that I am excited to be using. Active reading has helped me remember more information about the events that took place in chapter I am reading. I've noticed since I have been active reading I am more aware of details that may not have stood out to be more. I also feel strongly engaging in the book and not just reading it, for example thinking about why it was written a certain way or what the significance is to the writer and how it affects the reader. I would like to improve on marking personification as well as the types of dialogue that appear in the chapter.
Part Two: While The House on Mango Street and A Long Way Gone have a variety of differences, they do have some things in common. Sandra Ciseneros the author of The House on Mango Street is known for the extraordinary metaphors she uses to describe the culture sensitive life as a Latina young woman. Ishmael Beah the author of A Long Way Gone, shares the true story of his life as a child soldier. I love the detailed emotion the writer puts into this words, it makes you feel what is going on while you are reading. A strength they share is the passion they have put into writing their books. A weakness in the first book is the stories are so short that it is hard to place people and events together and build a timeline. In the second book a weakness would be focusing on so much detail that you kind of get of track.
Part Three: I believe the theme in chapter five is fear. So many first happen in this chapter, the fear of dying to hunger makes him cross his moral line. He is captured by the rebels, he gives us detail of his emotions taking over his physical body. “I trembled so hard that my lips shook”, “I was crying internally and my legs and hands trembled” This is important because it shapes his mindset for the rest of his life.

I agree that all of the new things he's seeing will definitely shape his life whether it's in a good way or a bad way.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your theme name, that chapter actually very dangerous. But, it did his mind strong.
ReplyDeleteI agree. I also thought that the theme here was fear. You chose a very strong quote. I also though he feared worrying about what would happen to him and his family and if he would ever see them again.
ReplyDeleteThis is a big theme because of how the situation will impact his life forever.
