A broad theme for this chapter is sadness and pain. But I would say a better theme for this chapter is destruction of beauty. In this chapter Cisneros tells about Sally being beat by her father. The reason I thought about the theme being destruction of beauty is because Esperanza talks about Sally being pretty but having bruises on her face. I think that’s a good theme because she’s a pretty girl but getting beaten by her father which is tearing down her beauty when he leaves marks on her. Even though Esperanza says she’s still pretty he’s tearing her down. I think that a good quote from this chapter is when Sally finally came and stayed with Esperanza but then her dad comes and gets her and tells her to come home she goes home thinking its going to be fine nothing is going to happen and then something does happen. Esperanza says “then we didn't need to worry. Until one day Sally’s father catches her talking to a boy and the next day she doesn’t come to school. And the next. Until the way Sally tells it, he just went crazy, he just forgot he was her father between the buckle and the belt.”
My role model is one of my old teachers her name is Alison Thompson. Not only is she like my role model but she has become like a second mom to me. She has helped me through many things in the time that I have known her. I couldn’t be more thankful for everything she has done for me. No matter what the situation was she has always been there for me. So much has happened in my life and no matter what it be my sisters and I could always count on her to be there for us. She was there for a shoulder to cry on when I found out that my mom was sick or when I got accepted into this college and she told me she knew I could do it. She will forever be a huge part in my life and I don’t know what I would do without her.

I thought this chapter was just heart wrenching. Surprisingly, the person I felt most empathy for was sally’s Dad. I’m not sure why but I felt like the majority of the emotions Esperanza describes are those of the dad, and she describes sally as more numb, or unemotional. I think the lack of emotions sally shows in this chapter speaks a lot about what abuse can do to a person.
ReplyDeleteI like the theme you picked because in that chapter you can tell that's whats happening to sally. She's being hurt.
